Sonos prepares to launch a portable speaker with Bluetooth and AirPlay 2

You know what we like sonos speakers, a range of connected speakers that could reach the high end despite not being among the leading ranges of HiFi sound. Despite this, we like them, and that is because the connectivity that these speakers give us must be taken into account, and they do sound incredibly good, and they do it better if we have more than one and enjoy the multiroom function that allows us to enjoy of our music in all our rooms.

And precisely today we bring you news related to Sonos, and it seems that this week the Sonos team has sent invitations to the technology press for an event in which they will present new devices. What do they want to surprise us with? Well, everything indicates that the next thing we see of the Sonos guys, after their arrival on the shelves of Ikea, will be a new portable speaker with Bluetooth and AirPlay 2. After the jump we tell you more about this launch.

Yes, the arrival of Bluetooth to the Sonos is important, since to date they have tried to avoid it by virtue of the benefits of audio transmission via Wi-Fi, but it is true that the market has always demanded it and it is that sometimes we find ourselves with that need and unfortunately this it wasn't possible with the Sonos. This new Sonos speaker that it is also portable will support for Bluetooth audio and Wi-Fi with AirPlay 2. Here we leave you with more information about what this new Sonos Bluetooth speaker will look like:

  • The speaker is larger than it appears in the photo. To get an idea of its size, it is taller and slightly wider than the Sonos One / Play: 1.
  • Supports hands-free voice commands from Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
  • The Sonos portable speaker is charged through a base station (we don't know the capacity of its battery). When away from the base unit, it can also be recharged via USB-C. If you take it on a trip, you won't necessarily need to bring the base.
  • It has an integrated handle on the back for easy transport. It is part of the core design of the device, not an accessory or a type of strap.
  • On the back is a button that switches between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (standard Sonos) modes.
  • When in Bluetooth mode, the speaker cannot be controlled with the Sonos app. It behaves like any other Bluetooth speaker. You pair a device and you're done.
  • Hands-free voice commands for Alexa and Google Assistant are also not available (currently) in Bluetooth mode.
  • In normal Wi-Fi mode, the speaker appears like any other Sonos device in the app, but with a battery indicator.
  • Like other recent Sonos speakers, the Sonos portable speaker will support Apple's AirPlay 2.

And not only that, as you know, Sonos speakers can use the Sonos app that we have installed on our iPhone to equalize the sound of the speakers according to the dimensions and characteristics of the room in which it is located. A equalization that in this new Sonos with Bluetooth could be done without the need for a device thanks to microphones that incorporates the speaker for use with virtual assistants, we go in the style of Apple's HomePod. We are looking forward to this release and will give you more information as soon as it is released.
