Spotify Faces $ 1.6 Billion Lawsuit

The streaming services They are expanding, we just have to see all the maneuvers that both Spotify and Apple Music carry out: plan changes, price modifications, exclusivities ... they exploit the content to offer users a different experience than the one offered by their opponent and win users assets.

A few days ago we learned that Spotify is facing a lawsuit of 1.6 billion dollars. There are several reasons to file a lawsuit, but in these sectors the most common is this: copyright violation. The lawsuit has been filed by the music company Wixen Music Publishing.

$ 1.6 billion: 10% of the estimated value of Spotify

Spotify has already faced other plaintiffs and, at times, emerged victorious but at other times the fines imposed were millionaire. The problem with all these lawsuits lie in the Copyright Law of the United States where it obliges reproduction services to obtain a specific and compulsory license to be able to reproduce a melody in any medium.

This time, Spotify faces Wixen Music Publishing, a class action lawsuit involving artists such as Dan Auerbach, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Dand's Donald Fagen and many more. The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in California and in the letter the compensation of 1.6 billion dollars is requested, which would represent 10% of the estimated value of Spotify, a strong blow and it is intended to go public.

In addition, the imposition of a precautionary measure in case of ruling against the streaming service. On the other hand, the plaintiff company adds that more than 20% of the more than 30 million songs on Spotify are reproduced without a license, something that we do not know if it is true or not, but that Spotify defends itself by claiming that the transmission of that music does not violate any law.

Why do you always write "1.6 billion" instead of 1.600 billion, which is how that figure is correctly said in Spanish? Since you know that "billion" is not a trillion but a billion, you only needed to do the multiplication (1,6 x 1.000) to obtain the correct figure 😉
