Microsoft returns to smartphones with the Surface Duo: two screens and managed by Android

Surface Duo

Steve Ballmer's decision to buy Nokia at any price cost the Redmond company dearly. With the arrival of the current CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, the first thing he did was get rid of the mobile division, and abandon Windows 10 Mobile development.

The computer giant, which for a few years, is also entering the hardware manufacturing, has presented the renewal of the Surface range, a range that initially consisted of two devices and currently reaches almost ten. The Surface Duo is the return, halfway, of Microsoft to smartphones.

The Suface Duo shows us a smartphone that folds, is composed of two screens and managed by Android 9. Microsoft has worked hand in hand with Google, as did Samsung with the Galaxy Fold, to offer an interface perfectly adapted to this new device, a device that is adapts the interface of the applications that we use to the two screens, as we can see in the video above.

The two screens have a size of 5,63 inches and are joined with a hinge that allows the screens to be moved 360 degrees, allowing the device to be opened and placing a screen in front and another behind the terminal. Inside, you will find the second-generation Snapdragon 855. The launch of the Surface Duo is scheduled for Christmas next year. The price of the Surface Duo when it hits the market is unknown at the moment.

The design, if we look at the video, Microsoft shows us a device quite reduced in terms of thickness, if we compare it with the Samsung model. This terminal is designed to get the most out of Microsoft applications so its main use will not be the consumption of content. Whether this model will set the market trend is anyone's guess. We will have to wait for its launch on the market.

Surface Neo

Microsoft's commitment to tablets is found in the Surface Neo, a larger Surface Duo that also shows us applications adapted to two screens. Unlike the Surface Duo, inside the Surface Neo we find Windows 10X, so we will be able to install any application currently available both outside and inside the official Microsoft application store.

When placed at a 90 degree angle for typing, a virtual keyboard is automatically displayed. We can also make use of a physical keyboard that also it can be scrolled up to turn the bottom of the screen into a touchpad. If we keep the keyboard in the lower part, the upper part of the screen, it becomes a TouchBar, wider and more useful than the one that Apple offers us in the MacBook Pro.

Regarding the price and availability, we will have to wait, too, until Christmas next year.
