Apple Watch integrates an oximeter, but it is not activated

pulse oximeter

During the years leading up to the launch of the Apple Watch, formerly called the iWatch, the rumors surrounding the device, they made us presage that the Apple smartwatch would carry an endless number of meters that would allow us to control even the smallest aspect of our health, from a blood glucose meter, to the speed of blood to prevent heart problems, through an oximeter, which allows us to measure the amount of oxygen in our blood.

A few days ago we presented you with the breakdown that the guys at iFixit have made to the Apple Watch. In the same have found a sensor to measure heart rate and an oximeter, which is currently disabled. Thanks to the oximeter that emits infrared lights to perform its measurements, we can control the oxygen concentration in our blood. This device can be very useful for all those users who go or use the Apple Watch to monitor their exercise as well as control their health.

From iFixit they point to two possible reasons why Apple has deactivated this device in the first version despite being installed. One of the reasons could have been that the measurements obtained have not been completely satisfactory And to launch a sensor that offers very different results, they will prefer to wait for the next generation of the Apple Watch to be able to activate it as long as they get reliable results.

The other possible reason why Apple has disabled this sensor could come from the FDA. Perhaps, although relationships with Tim Cook's company are very satisfactory, this body would not have facilitated the approval to those of Cupertino to be able to use it on the Apple Watch. As soon as it gets approval, a slight software update could activate the Apple Watch's built-in oximeter without having to wait for new generations of the device.
