The protectionism of the European Union against the products of non-member countries is still the order of the day, and the truth is, we cannot complain if we understand that its intention is only to improve the lives of European citizens. However, this gives rise to news as unlikely as the one I am going to tell you about today. Now the European Union is investigating Apple Pay for applying possible monopolistic practices and measures are not ruled out. I find it hard to believe that Apple Pay can be reproached for something when it comes to contactless payments, you just have to see the competition and development, but hey ...
It has been known that the European Commission has opened an investigation file against Apple Pay, the contactless payment service of the Cupertino company that we all use daily, and if you don't use it… what are you waiting for? Brussels has sent a questionnaire to the North American company and other companies that participate in this market in order to decide through the body dedicated to Competition to start a more in-depth investigation. Apparently, this procedure has been initiated after the numerous complaints received from rivals regarding contactless payments in the market.
Margrethe Vestager, Competition Commissioner has communicated during the last congress held in Lisbon the following statements:
We have many concerns about how Apple Pay works, people see that it is increasingly difficult to compete in the market for easy payments, so we want to monitor possible anticompetitive and abusive market practices by operators of this type of services .
It will not be the first or the last time that a company complains about Apple's practices within the European Union, as Spotify (a Swedish company) did at the time against Apple Music.
