The new iPhone 6s has 2 microphones on the bottom

iPhone 6s

I confess, when I bought the iPhone 6 last year I already knew it and my intentions were still clear, I am going to be one of the people who buys the new iPhone 6s, and I say this because today in my frequent «walk of admiration» by the new iPhone features web (You know, when you go to buy a new iPhone and you still have a month left until you have it, that endless wait makes sense if you go checking from time to time what awaits you when you buy it, and by the way you maintain the hype).

Well, in one of my walks I have decided to compare the issue of size (phone dimensions) to verify that the increase was indeed true priceless in these dimensions that will leave my Aquatik case (Lunatik aquatic case) useless, I have come across something unexpected, the iPhone 6s had a different arrangement at the bottom than the iPhone 6.

Quickly I have opened both websites to visually compare the diagrams of both devices, and to my amazement I was right, the new iPhone 6s has at the bottom of a second microphone, a detail that has gone unnoticed throughout the keynote, or so we think.

The second microphone

Here are photos of the bottom of the iPhone 6 and 6s:

What is the point of it?

Many of you will ask, what difference does this make? What advantage does it offer over the iPhone 6? To answer these questions I will say that there are many things to take into account, we should first know if Apple wants to use both microphones to capture our voice with greater precision, if it plans to use one for normal use and another for noise cancellation or if in A third and possible case has been put there exclusively for the function "Hey Siri" always active and is in charge of the new M9 coprocessor.

What do we know? That Apple has mentioned 3 things; HD calls, "Hey Siri" function always active and finally on its website in the "video recording" section it is written "improved noise reduction".

HD calls

The announced HD calls are an improvement rather than internal chips, thanks to a new dedicated chip they can be made calls via LTE or Wi-Fi allowing data transfer with higher bandwidth and higher speed, which in turn translates into higher quality audio.

This however does not mean that Apple cannot add a second microphone to make sure our words are captured clearly and without interruption.

Hey Siri, is it because of you?

The new iPhone 6s has a M9 coprocessor Integrated in the A9 chip that will manage the sensors more efficiently without having to wake up the beast (CPU) and waste power, this microphone could be controlled by the M9 coprocessor to manage the function of Hey Siri which in this new model is always active.

Noise Cancellation

This new microphone could also be dedicated exclusively to the Noise Cancellation, something that the iPhone 6 despite being decent had work ahead to do, this time we could see how Apple has added a third microphone to capture noise levels and actively cancel them.

Despite that and what we can get from the web, I think I remember that when Apple said «noise reduction»In the keynote he was referring to the camera and its new image processor, which would reduce noise in photos to make them clearer, more detailed and beautiful.

However, this last option should not be considered discarded, it is always possible that the destination of this third microphone is to be able to neutralize annoying noises both in calls and in video capture.

Conclusion

Paraphrasing Socrates, I just know that I don't know anything, the only thing we know for now is that on the bottom of the new iPhone 6s (and 6s Plus) there is an extra microphone that at the bottom of the past iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is not, we can only wait for Apple to pronounce on it (I doubt it) or that when it goes on sale someone will decipher this enigma.

And they take a hole out of the speaker, I hope they have improved it, since if Apple is not an expert in candy.

Hello, altergeek. Don't pay too much attention to that. The iPhone 6 Plus in the web drawing has 6 holes and mine has 8. They may be close together and one does not take the place of the other.
