The next iPhones could have 120Hz displays

Yes, we have barely been with the new siPhone for a month but we are already talking about the characteristics that the models that Apple presents us in 2020 could have, and one of them could be a new screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. There are already Apple products with this type of screen, specifically the iPad Pro, but this would be the first OLED screen with 120Hz since iPads mount LCD screens.

And it is that at the moment there are already high-end models with screens that reach 90Hz (even some 120Hz model we can find), so that Apple is already beginning to require that their excellent ProMotion screens from the iPad with 120Hz reach the iPhone, with all the improvements that this entails.

The screen refresh rate consists of how many times per second the content displayed on the screen is updated. Smartphones usually have 60Hz screens, which means that in one second the screen is updated 60 times. Not to be confused with FPS (frames per second), although they are related. A video or game at 60fps means that it displays 60 images every second. If a screen has 60Hz and the content 60fps, everything fits perfectly and the result is smoother. If the screen is 60Hz and the content is 30fps, the device has to duplicate each image (30 × 2 = 60) which translates into less fluidity.

At this point there is very little content at 90fps, much less at 120fpsTherefore, to view multimedia content or play games, the 60Hz screens are more than enough. As 90Hz and 120Hz displays proliferate, developers will adapt their games to get the most out of them, but this is not the case for now. However, it is clearly noticeable when scrolling a web page or through the menus of an application, since when the screen is updated more times per second, the result is much smoother animations and movements, without jumps.

Nor can we forget something important. The first thing is that to "move" games well at 60fps or more, you need good hardware. The second thing is that battery consumption increases, due to the work involved in having to process this content and because the screen is refreshed more times and therefore consumes more battery.
