One of the main novelties that come from the hand of the new iPhone 13 Pro range is the ProRes video compression format support, a feature that Apple devoted a lot of time to in the presentation of the new generation of the iPhone 13 Pro but that has a limitation.
As we can see on the Apple website, the possibility of recording in ProRes format in 4K quality at 30 frames per second is limited to models with 256GB of storage plus, leaving out the 128 GB model, a model that can only use this format in 1080p resolution.
Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), does not explain the reason for this limitation, but it is to be assumed that the company has considered that 128 GB of storage is not enough space to store the heavy files that are generated.
However, if he could offer the possibility and whether the user chooses to use it or not, since for small projects it will not be necessary to have so much storage space. What is clear is that, following Apple's philosophy, if you want to use 4K recording at 30 fps, you will have to pay.
La price difference between the 128 GB storage version and the 256 GB version is 120 euros, a price that if you are willing to pay the 1.159 euros of the iPhone 13 Pro 128 GB or the 1.259 of the iPhone Pro Max with the same storage capacity, it will not be a great economic effort.
The ProRes format offers a high color fidelity taking up relatively little space on the device, making it ideal for recording semi-professional projects, or even professionals. This is widely used in post-production workflows and can easily be exported to editors like Final Cut Pro.
I have a question, at 4K you can only use the ProRes at 30fps but can it be used at 1080p at 60fps?
In the image that I have taken from the Apple website and included in the article, it indicates that it can record in ProRes format at 4K and 30 fps, a resolution that is reduced to 1080 and 30 fps in the 128 GB version.
At the moment it seems that this format is limited to 30 fps, a pity.
We will have to wait for the next iPhone models to take advantage of this format at a higher frame rate.
Greetings.
