TSMC prepares a 5nm processor for the iPhone 12

Miniaturization is a very important part of technology, especially in mobile devices where every millimeter is important. In the case of processors, making them more compact not only helps to save space, but also means a significant battery saving, that is, an improvement in terms of resources. In any case, Apple has been allied with TSMC for a few years as far as iPhone processors are concerned, making it its sole supplier and abandoning Samsung for good. According to the latest leaks, TSMC is preparing a processor of only 5 nanometers for the iPhone 12.

TSMC has been working exclusively with Apple since 2016 and since then they have released the following processors:

  • A10 chip: 16nm
  • A11 chip: 10nm
  • A12 chip: 7nm
  • A13 chip: 7nm +
  • A14 chip: 5nm

iPhone 11

In just five full years they have been able to reduce the chipset size to more than a third And this is assuming not only that the iPhone is the most powerful mobile phone on the market, but also a better management of resources and above all a significant battery saving, something that in the case of the iPhone had been a real drama in recent years. years and that seems quite out of date with the arrival of the iPhone XR.

In theory, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple would launch up to four different models during this year 2020, a sort of two "Pro" models and two standard models, all of them being compatible except one with 5G connectivity, and it is almost surprising that the Cupertino firm is taking time to join this type of connectivity, having always been a champion of the latest version of connectivity available. In the meantime, we will continue to wait for future leaks in the production chain, clearly numbed by the Coronavirus.
