Turn your photos into comics with ToonPaint

The iPhone is a gadget that never ceases to amaze us, and even more so to our friends when you teach them programs like this. It is a program that, as the headline says, transform a normal photo into a comic effect very accomplished.

In just one step, we can see how our girlfriend, friends or pets become a character that could almost be in the DC or Marvel cartoons. Then we can, with a little practice, in an instant color the photos with our fingers, even without having a drawing idea, to give it a more realistic look, pop or to taste.

The first thing we do is select a photo that we have saved on our iPhone or we can take one instantly, but I, as in any program of this type, I recommend that you take the photo with the camera, that it remains saved on the reel and then you access the program. Then, the App performs two steps, and voila, we see our photo "comic" in black and white.

It depends on how the photo is taken and the conditions, the effect will be better or worse. I recommend that the scene is well lit and that it stands up to nuances (that the image is not burned or dark) so that the program detects and makes the edges richer.

The next step, if we have not been satisfied, is to saturate more or less gray, black or give more or less edges, that is to taste. And we can also change the parameters of the predefined settings, which will start rendering again.

Finally, comes the most active part: painting. So we have four colors to work with to color the drawing and if we want more, we double-click on one of them, and we will get a complete palette of colors to choose from. My advice is that you always leave the color closest to skin fixed and change the other three to taste. In any case, when choosing a color, we can also select with a tool the color that is already in the original photo or in our drawing, just in case we have deleted one previously used from the selection of colors.

All that remains is to play with our fingers to zoom, paint, zoom out, use a wider or smaller brush width and with practice, in a jiffy we will become artists, and our friends will ask us to send emails with the result.

The only thing that doesn't quite convince me is the interface, which is a bit clunky, but in the end, with five drawings done, you get used to it and paint as if you were a real Dave Gibbons.

We can find it in the AppStore for € 1. Highly recommended, worth what it costs.
