Tutorial: what are SHSHs and what are they for

Why do SHSH appear?

Apple, tired of the jailbreak, introduces a new iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) and begins to require a signature to install a firmware, that is, the .ipsw of any iOS are incomplete, to be able to install them they lack a unique signature of your device, that's why you can only install the latest firmware, because it is the only one that Apple signs.

Where do the SHSH come from?

SHSH They can only leave Apple, you request a restoration with a firmware and Apple has to give you your signature so that you can install it, otherwise the restoration will fail.

What is an SHSH?

We can say that it is an electronic signature, to make a comparison it is like a DNI (identity document in Spain) with the difference that you need a new one for each new firmware that Apple releases.

What do we use SHSH for in the world of jailbreak?

We use them to be able to restore to previous versions, as we have said we can only update to the latest version because Apple only signs that version.

But if we have the SHSH saved we can update to the version we want (as long as we have the SHSH of that version).

Sometimes they are used for a type of jailbreak that requires a beta file, for example, for the untethered MONTE jailbreak we need iOS 4.2.1 (and its SHSH that Apple now gives us because it is the latest firmware) and a file of iOS 4.2b3, therefore, to install this file we will need the SHSH of iOS 4.2b3.

How are SHSH stored?

There are two ways to save the SHSH, if you have the jailbreak done every time a new firmware appears Cydia will AUTOMATICALLY save your SHSH without you having to do anything.

Whether you have jailbroken or not, there is another way to save them, a program called TinyUmbrella available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Can I only save the SHSH of the version I have installed?

NO, you can only save the SHSH from the last version that Apple offers by iTunes, regardless of the version that you have on your iPhone.

So how do I get an SHSH from a version older than the one I have installed?

You simply CANNOT, as we have said you can only get the SHSH of the version that is officially in iTunes, that is, you either saved it at the time or there is no way to do it.

Where are SHSHs kept?

What we do is request the signature (SHSH) from Apple, and save it on a Cydia server, you can also save them on your computer in case there is any catastrophe to be able to send them back to the Cydia server.

How are SHSHs obtained from Cydia?

When you install a new firmware iTunes connects to an Apple server and requests the SHSH, what we do is modify the host file of our computer (the file where our computer tells iTunes where it has to connect to request the SHSH) so that instead of asking Apple, ask Cydia for them, this way we can get the signature to restore to older firmwares

How do I modify this Host file?

The easiest thing is to download TinyUmbrella and the same program will modify it automatically.

I'll tell you about my case: I had to restore but it wouldn't let me install the 4.1 ipsw again, so I had to put 4.2.1 on it. I guess it's because of the SHSH issue. I will try to jailbreak a mac (or hackintosh, or macos from vmware) with the latest redsnow since there is no windows version. Before restoring I had all SHSHs saved in cydia (up to 4.2b3 and 4.2.1). Will I need the TinyUmbrella to put them in the iphone 4 or just running redsnow would be enough ????

    Thanks guys.

    1.    gnzl said

In your specific case you don't need tinyumbrella because as it is only an iOS 4.2b3 file, it will be taken by redsn0w, but for general cases, TinyUmbrella always installed

    Great information document.

I yesterday already desperate for not sharpening my 3Gs new bootrom I tried to put the firm 4.2.1 through the Firmware Bundle of PwnageTool (so as not to upload the bb that I have in 5.12) but iTunes keeps giving me an error when restoring (error 29) whatever you do.

I no longer know whether to upload to the baseband of the iPad or what….

I think that mine has no solution sincerely.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please be very grateful.

    A greeting.

I mean, I have the iPhone 4 iOS 4.0.1 with Jailbreak (and its SHSH saved with Tiny and Cydia)
If I want to save the SHSH from iOS 4.2.1 (which is the current one) I just have to launch TinyUmbrella and save; no need to update to iOS 4.2.1; sure?
    Thank you

Good tutorial, but excuse me I still don't understand some things.
I have iPhone4 with 4.2.1 of the first ones I jailbroken and saved everything with the TinyUmbrella.
Now I want to jailbreak unthethered and it asks me for the iOS 4.2b3 file, is that the SHSH?
Is it the one that I have saved in the TinyUmbrella? is another one? How is it done? because automatically I do not know how you mean, is pressing STAR TSS SERVER ?.
    Thanks for the job

So people who have 4.2.1 without jailbreak, do not need SHSH or 4.2b3 right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

  15.   texas said

In another thread he explained it, people who have received their 4th generation iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch with the firm version 4.2.1, and therefore have never had their device in a previous firm version, to this day THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE THE JAILBREAK UNTETHERED IN ANY WAY.
This happens because one of the indespensable requirements to do so is to have saved the SHSH of the 4.2b3 version of firms, in fact this version of firms has never been an official firm, if not the 3rd beta and GM of what is currently in day is the official firm 4.2.1.
It happens that to all those of us who had the iPhone with 4.1, with the Jailbreak done, Cydia itself has saved the SHSH from 4.2b3 and that is why we have it saved and that is why we can do the untethered jailbreak, something that once I repeat, all those people who received their device in the firm version 4.2.1 and therefore have never had a previous version and consequently have not been able to save the SHSH due to any of the methods already mentioned, CANNOT DO IT.
I hope this helps those who are desperately looking for a way to downgrade a previous firm or simply Jailbreak their device, which came from the factory with firm 4.2.1.
To all of you who are in that situation, we would love to be able to help you, but there is no way to do it and I am afraid that until the 4.3 firm comes out there will be no way to solve this, no matter how much we weigh

It's good that I bought my ipod touch 4g when they still came with iOS 4.1 and I still haven't updated but I already have my SHSH saved = DD, because who knows what such that for the Jailbreak of iOS 4.3 to be untethered, the SHSH of 4.2 is needed b3

  17.   fer said

Thank you very much !! I had been looking for a long time and I did not want to ask so as not to be heavy hehe. One last thing, if I had version 4.1 from the factory, and had not updated to 4.2.1, could I jail it?

  18.   Carlos Trejo said

@fer if you can Jailbreak if you have version 4.1 from factory if you can apply jailbreak through greenpois0n or limera1n

Let's see ... I don't know if it will be explained ... but I'm a little tired of waiting 🙁 🙁 and since I'm not very upset, I am afraid of «fingering» in case I screw it up.
I had my ipad 3.2.2 with its jail untetered perfectly running with limera1n. As they were supposed to release the jail for 4.2.1 quickly, I updated without hesitation (bloody mistake) and now I find myself without jail, without being able to use the countless apps that I had and others and waiting for the new jail to come out . The question is clear ... can I somehow go back to 3.2.2 or have some jail untetered without it being excessively complicated to do so?
When I did the jail at 3.2.2 I didn't save anything, I don't know if Cidya saved it for me or not. I already have all the firms downloaded (3.2.2 and 4.2.1) but I don't dare to do anything to the thing ... I'd really appreciate if you answer me ...

Download all the SHSH from the saurik server with the tinyumbrella, if you have 3.2.2 you are in luck! start the TTS server and restore to 3.2.2 and voila! If the SHSH of 3.2.2 are not there… garlic and water… (Like me…)

Hello, I am going to present my topic, to see if any of you can help me. First I have an iPhone 3GS with new bootrom, from movistar, at the moment it is on iOS 4.2.1. I will tell you what happened to me, the iPhone died after updating the appcake + from cydia, it did not start, nor did it put in DFU or anything, at that time I had iOS 3.1.3 with the jailbreak echo with limera1n, and the SHSH saved in cydia. I managed to put it in DFU mode using limera1n but it wouldn't start, so as soon as it got into DFU it went to restore from iTunes. But what was my surprise when he didn't let me restore to 3.1.3 and I installed 4.2.1 (I did something wrong for sure). Now comes my question, could I jailbreak unthetered to 4.2.1 and then use those SHSH to restore to 3.1.3 and be able to have the jailbreak without problems (then I would update to 4.1 and stick with that). Greetings and sorry for the billet and thank you very much in advance.

  22.   rotate said

hello daxx13, but this tinyumbrella is put on the ipad or on the mac or pc ???

  23.   texas said

Fer, indeed, if you had it in version 4.1 you could Jailbreak it without any problem, in fact my iPhone 4 is still in that version and it will continue until there is a Jailbreak in conditions for 4.2.1.

Jose, to restore an external firm NOT ONLY it is necessary to have the SHSH saved, if not it is also necessary to modify the host file of your PC or Mac, if you do not do it, you will not be able to restore to an external firm, in the This article's tutorial is very well explained, that is because if the host is not modified, the signature query is made to Apple and its servers answer negatively and give you an error, on the contrary if the host is modified, the query It is done to the Surik servers and in case of having the SHSH saved on their servers, the answer is affirmative, with which the restoration continues and it is possible to do it, perhaps that has been your problem or the reason that you have not been able to restore even having the SHSH saved.

    and could I put the b6 of redsnow ???? to 4.1.2 ??

  27.   texas said

Jose, if you had the SHSH of 3.1.3 saved in Cydia, possibly you also have all the others, if you do not need to release the iphone, which I understand not, what you can do is downgrade or lower your iphone to version 4.1 and once Once this is done you can jailbreak it, in any case to download it you also need to have modified the host file of your PC or Mac, you will also need the Recboot which is an application that allows you to remove the iPhone from DFUi mode, this is why At the end of the dowgrade it will give you an error and it will not finish, but in reality it is already done, at that moment you apply the Recboot and it will take you out of DFU, at that moment you will see the icons of the iphone, you activate it in iTunes and You can already do the Jailbreak, in Gooble there are several tutorials on how to download the version.

  28.   jose said

Texuas, thanks a million. You do not know the joy that you have given me. Well, I'm not going to look for a tutor, and try to do it. Thanks again.

    Hello…

I bought a 4gb Iphone 32 two weeks ago in the second hand from a person who had it stored and unused…. on January 9 it was ...
When I looked at the version that was, I saw that it had 4.0.1 and I did Jailbreak without any problem but I imagine that Cydia will not have been able to save the SHSH ý that it will be impossible to get them in case I have to do a restoration, right?… .And in this case will force me to install 4.2.1 ... right?

A greeting and thank you very much

  30.   texas said

Carlos, effectively, saves you the SHSH of the current version of firms, not the one that the iphone has, that is ... it will save the SHSH of the current 4.2.1, even though you have 4.0.1, in such a way that If you have to restore you have to do it to 4.2.1, but for example when you are in 4.3, you will see that if you can restore to 4.2.1 because that SHSH will have been saved for you.

  31.   Carlos said

Well, it's a shame because with version 4.0.1 it was so easy to jailbreak that I didn't even believe it…. because I entered the web Jailbreakme and it did only the phone….
Hopefully it does not fail me and I have to restore because if it forces me to put 4.2.1 or 4.3 I imagine that it still cannot be Jailbroken or it is not safe to do it in addition to being much more complicated, right?

Thank you very much for your help!

Good Morning! I have read the tutorials and comments several times and I only have one question; I have a 3Gs with version 4.1 installed, and I read this:

«Can I only save the SHSH of the version I have installed?

NO, you can only save the SHSH of the latest version that Apple offers through iTunes, regardless of the version that you have on your iPhone.

So how do I get an SHSH from a version older than the one I have installed?

You simply CANNOT, as we have said you can only get the SHSH of the version that is officially in iTunes, that is, you either saved it at the time or there is no way to do it. »

Well, my question is: if I do the jail now, according to that, I can not save my shsh, because version 4.2 would be saved, not the 4.1 that I have installed and therefore I would theoretically have to wait for 4.3 to come out, right?

Sorry for my ignorance but the jail thing is new for me, although I suppose that one way or another I will be able to do it. Thank you very much !!

    1.    gnzl said

Hello, I have an iPhone 3GS, I was trying to downgrade because the itunes mode screen appeared, I read several tutorials, first I got error 3106 (I think that's the number) where the TinyU blocked me because I used the server SST (something like that), then another error appeared on 1600 and in a tutorial they told me that I would use the iREB, after using that I got the error 1015, the fact is that I was trying a lot, all the forums suggested that I I did in DFU mode and now I can't get out of that mode, download programs that take you out that way and don't work, I don't know if someone can help me with my problem, the screen is only black, what I have thought to do is leave it like that Until the battery is discharged, see if it shows the itunes mode again, the phone whenever I connect it, the TinyU recognizes it in DFU mode, so that is why I assume that it is still in that mode, but without being able to remove it that way .

Also (if my phone is not lost) I would like you to help me downgrade to a version prior to 4.X
