We can now watch VR videos from YouTube on the iPhone

Apple VR glasses concept

One of the next most important markets is Virtual Reality (VR for its acronym in English). Samsung and Microsoft are two of the companies that are working on Virtual Reality and many analysts say that Apple will start working on its own VR hardware and / or software in the medium term future. While we wait, Google has taken a step forward updating its application of YouTube official to allow iOS users to enjoy videos in Virtual Reality.

As we read in the list of changes included in YouTube 11.18, it has been added support for Google Cardboard and they assure that now you can see any video in VR. On the other hand, and this no longer has anything to do with virtual reality but with the new version of YouTube, a wrong labeling of videos seen in the subscription feed has been corrected, which made the application mark as «Seen »A video that we actually had pending.

Google Cardboard

To see the videos in VR we will need to have the aforementioned Google Cardboard, the cardboard glasses that you have in the previous image. Actually, the "magic" of virtual reality is in the videos. The device where they are played has to have something special and in the case of these VR videos we could say that it is enough that each eye see a different image, while isolating themselves from the rest of the world. The resulting image is a kind of optical illusion, which can make us watch a video in three dimensions, for example.

YouTube VR

From now on, when we see any video from the YouTube application and tap on the options button, we will see an image like the previous one. Logically, if we want to use the Google Cardboard we will have to touch on its icon, which will change the image and it will be shown as in the following:

As you can see, the image is ready to be seen with effects and it will move as we move the device. Of course, as I said before, the magic must be in the video, so I think we will not see anything special in a video if it has not been prepared for VR before uploading it to YouTube.

Si estáis interesados en ver este y otro software parecido en VR, podéis comprar uno que os guste desde la página web de Google Cardboard.

excuse my ignorance, a query is always seen in double when putting on my glasses? Wouldn't a single image be better, wouldn't seeing double be annoying?
