We tested the Griffin Survivor case for the iPhone 5

Griffin Survivor

Many of you already know it and many of you have it to protect your iPhone or iPad. I'm talking about the Griffin Survivor case, an alternative to Otterbox Defender that we reviewed a few days ago.

Why the Griffin Survivor and not the Otterbox Defender? In my case, the Griffin Survivor completely covers the rear camera, microphone, connectors and speaker And since the iPhone 5 will accompany me on MTB outings in which dust and mud are a common element, it is better that everything is hidden under a layer of dense silicone.

Griffin Survivor

Installation of the Griffin Survivor and it is somewhat tedious at first, nothing that cannot be fixed with an extra dose of patience so that everything is positioned correctly. In case you dare to buy it, I am giving you some tips.

The pfirst layer consists of a polycarbonate shell that protects the sides and the back of the iPhone 5. This part will be responsible for providing rigidity to the set. It also has a couple of padded areas to absorb vibrations. To insert the phone here, you have to start with the side that has the volume buttons, the rest will be a piece of cake if we do it like this.

Griffin Survivor

Once the iPhone 5 is inside this case, it is time to place the silicone frame that will be responsible for absorbing the strongest vibrations and impacts. Since this piece will completely cover the sides and back of the terminal, Griffin has installed small covers to conveniently access the Lightning port or mute switch.

The third layer corresponds to the protector of the entire front of the terminal. There is a transparent plastic sheet that promises to be scratch resistant and allows us to operate the phone normally.

Griffin Survivor

There is the possibility of using a plastic frame that has a multipurpose clamp. This clamp is capable of rotating on its own axis, has a safety lock and, in addition, it acts as a support if it is useful to us.

The Griffin Survivor It is a cover designed for adverse situations and to practice risky sports. It is not a case for day to day, it does not try to be pretty (although it has details in its design that look great), it only tries to protect our terminal as much as possible. Good proof of this is the video that you have above this paragraph.

Obviously, its dimensions are generous and that has its drawbacks. For example, to recharge the terminal we will have to insert the cable and we will not be able to use any dockeven though it is designed for use with covers. Another point against is that call quality deteriorates Due to the dust filters in the microphone and the front protector, they can still be maintained naturally and can be heard without problems.

Griffin Survivor

If you are looking for a case that protects the terminal with force but in a lighter way, Griffin has released a full range of Survivor cases ranging from more to less protection.

As for the price, the Griffin Survivor is around 40 euros although on the Internet we can save some money when buying it. Watch out for eBay, there are tons of replicas They come with the original packaging and are nothing more than a bad copy of this magnificent case.

In my case, I decided to play it safe and chose Covertica to buy it. They have the Griffin Survivor for iPhone 5 for 31,30 euros and If you use the 86SFFUC8 coupon you can save another 7%.

Now I only have make some arrangements to attach the cover to the handlebar of the bicycle and thus be able to use the iPhone 5 as GoPro, GPS, heart rate monitor and others. For that, my friend the velcro will provide me with the necessary help. If you are curious and sure, I promise a post.

You will see when I review the Armor, you can put it under water for half an hour and so much!

    1.    Nacho said

haha, but there you already go to 100 dollars. For the water I do not need protection either, but it is clear that this otterbox is the most versatile on the market, yes, it also pays. 😀

      1.    gnzl said

Yes, 100 euros, I already have the review recorded, if you want to see it I will send it to you by mail 😉

I took the defense to the mountains the other day, and my pocket usually gets wet and the perfect iPhone, the camera is so deep that it doesn't get wet. Let's see if I see the survivor!

One of these covers is fine to have there and use from time to time.

        1.    Nacho said

Well yes, they are very useful. I'm going to see how I can manage to couple it to the bike decently and to hold the stakes of the stones in the middle of the descent through the mountain. I have already requested something from DX but until it arrives ...

if my doubt is because I want to use it only for water. for diving in the sea and other water activities but not for mountaineering or mountain, that is why my doubt about the armor or the lifeproof

    Hello,

Sorry to be off-topic, but could someone tell me what is the aluminum dock that appears in the photo?

Thank you very much and greetings to all.

    Jorge.

Elevation Dock, I bought it when I was a project on Kickstarter. Now it's time to pay $ 89 for it:

Jorge, where did I say I say Diego. That's what I get for talking before trying things out. I have a CX 300 with a right angle connector and it fits without problems, I attach a photo:

As you can see, it fits without problems but as the jack is a little wider, there will be problems. Greetings!

I have had two lifeproofs with my iphone 4 and it goes from pm, I carry it continuously the only thing that lasts 6 months because the phone is one year old and I have been two. Does this have a headphone jack ?? Does it have an adapter like the lifeproof? I need another cover but given the duration of the liveproof I was looking at other solutions, I have a marble shop and there is a lot of dust and some humidity. Which one would you recommend?? All the best.

    1.    Nacho said

If you have a headphone jack but since the jack is very deep, the headphones cannot have a 90º connector but a straight one. If it is due to humidity and dust, I would not complicate much. Use a bumper and something similar to Aquapac:

Thanks for answering me. I have some Monster Beats and they have a right angle connector. With a bumper it would not be worth it because there is a lot of dust so I look for this type of covers that give me good protection. The problem with lifeproof is that I go to one every six months and with what they cost it is not a plan. That's why I wanted something that lasts a bit longer, the otterbox does not look bad in terms of duration and neither does this, but I see them very bulky. Toy made a mess. All the best.

The otterbox I have not gotten to see it live but yesterday I came out with the iPhone 5 inside the Survivor and a cowboy on. He was really comfortable, his pants pocket was loose and I had no feeling that he was a monster.

The truth is that I am very happy with the purchase

          1.    chukymail said

The problem is that I have the 4 and it will be a brick with the cover. Where do you recommend me to buy it? All the best.

The analysis is of the version for iPhone 5… it is mentioned even in the title.

One thing, when you say it scratches the paint, I suppose you mean the black model. Is it that the casing is peeling or does it create a superficial scratch that is palpable with the nails?

I bought the otter box for my 4s and although the phone has some lines in the bottom corner, but it still looks like it was fresh out of the box in March of last year. However, the case has been breaking especially because I use earpods a lot and I honestly think that this survivor will be its replacement since I feel it more robust.
