What we hope to see at WWDC 2019

We open the month of June and that means that one of the most anticipated moments of the year is about to happen. On June 3, Monday, WWDC 2019 begins, the conference for developers that Apple offers every year, and opens with the presentation of the software news for this year.

As usual, the first event of WWDC 2019 will be dedicated to the presentation of the new operating systems that Apple will launch just after the summer. iOS 13, macOS 10.15, tvOS 13 and watchOS 6, but we can also see some hardware, new devices and / or accessories, and perhaps some unexpected surprise. What can we expect from this event? We give you a summary of everything we have discussed in recent weeks.

iOS 13

It is without a doubt the protagonist year after year. Mobile devices become more relevant as time goes by, and the changes that come to the iPhone and iPad operating systems are always the most anticipated at this annual event. We have been talking about the possible news for months that may arrive this year and we summarize them below.

Dark mode

It has been several years talking about the possible incorporation of dark mode in iOS, but it seems that this year is the definitive one. After last year hitting macOS 10.14 Mojave, it seems inevitable that iOS 13 will inherit this new functionality that would make it the screen of our iPhone uses predominantly black colors when it is at night and / or there is little ambient light. The leaked images do not give too many clues about this new feature, but it would work in a similar way to how macOS 10.14 does now, maybe even with dynamic wallpapers that change depending on the time of day.

Sleep mode

In addition to the dark mode there would also be a new "sleep mode" that would complement the well-known "Do not disturb" function that has been with us for several years. Activating this sleep mode would activate the "do not disturb" mode by default, the lock screen would be darkened so that it does not dazzle when picking up the iPhone, and all incoming notifications would be muted. This "sleep mode" also interacts with the "sleep" function within the Clock application that can be used as an alarm and tells you when to go to bed.

Volume bar

Another feature that iOS users have been claiming for a long time is that the interface that is shown when we learn and lower the volume, which occupies the center of the screen and is extremely annoying when we are using the iPhone, will be completely renovated by a much less intrusive, as a bar, that would appear on the side of the screen.

Search my

The Find My iPhone app has been with us for years, and with iOS 13 it would undergo one of its biggest renovations since it was created. "Find My" could be your name, and it would bring together the current "Find My iPhone" with the "Find My Friends" app. Among the novelties that would include could include the ability to use other nearby iOS devices to send the location of our iPhone even if it is not connected to a WiFi or mobile network. It will also include the possibility of finding friends who share their location with you in real time, and being able to receive notifications when someone arrives at a previously established place.

IPad enhancements

It may be the main protagonist of this update to iOS 13, with improvements in multitasking that allow having several floating windows on the screen, stacking them by application types, being able to open several windows of the same application, etc. There has also been a lot of talk about a change to the iPad home screen, currently very wasted and that only allows to place the icons without being able to show more information.

Gestures to undo the text written on the iPad and a new way to select various elements on the screen, for example in tables, by using several fingers at the same time would also be novelties that would greatly facilitate work with the Apple tablet. There has also been talk of the possibility that Apple allow mouse use on iPad, something that seems likely in my opinion.

Other changes

In addition to all this, we could see improvements in the Reminders application aimed at a better organization of them, or the possibility of Mail labeling and organizing emails in different categories. Messages could get from WhatsApp the possibility of changing your profile picture and add certain information to it, as well as improvements in the Books application, with challenges that you must meet to get medals, in the Health application to better understand the menstural cycle, etc.

Watch 6

The Apple Watch sweeps sales, so many Apple users are looking forward to the changes that may come to our smart watches. watchOS 6 can be a further step in the independence of the Apple Watch with respect to the iPhone, and changes can be geared towards this purpose.

Own app store

Finally, it would not be necessary to install an application on the iPhone to be able to install it on the Apple Watch. The Apple watch would have its own application store, independent of the iPhone, and the apps would be installed without the need for them to do so on the iPhone as well. Will there be a sphere shop? It is not disposable, although nothing has been leaked about it. Yes, new spheres will be included in this update.

What's new in applications

New applications such as Calculator, Voice Notes and Audiobooks will arrive, which will be reinstalled on the Apple Watch. In addition there will be improvements in the Health application, with a section to remember the medication you should take, and another to help women know their time of the menstrual cycle. There will be new complications, including one that would inform you about ambient noise, alerting you in the event that the noise could damage your hearing.

Following the launch of the Apple Watch LTE globally, Appel could take the step with watchOS 6 and allow third-party applications to make use of this watch's own connectivity. Until now, only native applications can make use of it, leaving third-party apps only the possibility of receiving notifications via LTE. Perhaps with watchOS 6 Apple will allow messaging applications that can work without the iPhone connected, or music and podcast applications.

macOS 10.15

Apple's operating system for computers will receive a large number of features inherited from iOS, but also other features like iTunes 'disintegration' in several independent applications, or the possibility of using the iPad as an external display.

Cross-platform applications

The "project Marzipan" consists of the possibility of developing applications for iOS and macOS, which serve both for iPhone and iPad as well as for Mac, and will take an important step with macOS 10.15. Apple already created the first "universal" applications with Home, Stock, and Voice Memos, and now it will give developers the tools they need to do it with their applications. This would dramatically increase the number of apps available for Mac, saving developers a lot of work.

Within this project will appear new applications for macOS, such as Music, Books and Podcast. Right now integrated into iTunes, These applications would be very similar to what we know on iOS right now. There will also be a TV app, but that isn't expected to arrive until the fall, when Apple's service is launched.

iPad as external display

macOS 10.15 and iOS 13 will allow Let's use the iPad as an external screen for our computer, either desktop or laptop. We can open windows directly on that external screen, and even use our Apple Pencil to draw on the iPad, so it will become a very useful graphic tablet for designers.

Other functions

With macOS 10.15 we can use the Apple Watch to identify ourselves if we are asked for the administrator password, or so that passwords are entered automatically when browsing the internet. The "Find My" application will also be available for Mac, as well as the "Time of use" function that allows you to know your use of the device and establish limits for the little ones in the house.

TvOS 13

We do not know what may be included in the update to tvOS 13, but it is to be expected that there will be at least cosmetic changes. Perhaps it is one of the surprises that could give us on Monday, because not a single leak about the Apple TV operating system has been commented on In the last months.

Hardware

It is another of the great unknowns. The WWDC is not characterized by major hardware releases, but there are usually news especially in terms of Mac computers. It may be that after a long time of waiting the Mac Pro sees the light, at least in a video presentation. We may also see a new 6-inch 31K motor, a perfect complement to that computer.

A new Apple TV? Apple is not expected to launch a new model, although perhaps a internal renovation of Apple TV 4K with better processor for the future Apple video game platform it could happen. New colorful straps, holsters and covers for summer could also appear at the event.
