WhatsApp stops working on iPhone 4S and removes support for iOS 9

Facebook WhatsApp

The instant messaging application par excellence (or at least, almost), has been updated this week and brings bad news for those users who have older terminals: it will no longer work on those terminals. This latest version stop supporting iOS 9, as far asthat users who have an iPhone 4S, will not be able to use the application on this version. The new update of the application, 2.21.50 for iPhone, is now available in the App Store. Despite not indicating it in the description, the application requires iOS 10 or higher to be able to use it. As the iPhone 4S cannot be updated to iOS10 due to Apple's obsolescence policy, those users who have this device will not be able to use the app with versions later than 2.21.50 (inclusive).

With a new article published by the company itself on its official website explains the Necessary requirements of a device for the application to be installed:

To use WhatsApp, the following supported devices are recommended:

  • Phones with Android OS 4.0.3 and later versions
  • Phones with iOS 10 and later versions
  • Some phone models with KaiOS 2.5.1 or later OS, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2

The last time the app was updated to cut back on compatibility with other devices, it was in February 2020 when support for iOS 8 was removed and those users with iPhone 4, suffered the same problem that iPhone 4S users are going to have now.

If you are one of the affected users, you may be interested in exporting all your chats to a new application as Telegram (which gives you the option already natively in the app) or to your cloud so as not to lose them.

On the other hand, the WhatsApp update includes, according to the description, the following:

  • Presentation of temporary messages
  • Search for stickers with text or emojis
  • New wallpapers

However, these news had already entered previous versions so we understand that the update has resolved some bugs and focuses on removing support for iPhone models that do not support iOS 10. Bad news that, despite everything, we will continue to live as time passes with other devices.
