Why Apple Music is no better than the competition

apple-music-worst-competition

Much is the commotion that Apple Music has caused, marketing above all. In fact the music industry has been shaken at least after knowing the intrusion of the greatest of technology in the world of music (once again). But all that glitters is not gold. We are facing a service that despite coming standard on almost 20% of the world's smartphones It has only managed to host eleven million users in your three-month trial plan. It seems that the musical offer, the method or simply the interface has not finished convincing the public. And it is that Apple Music is undoubtedly a novelty and a push to a fairly stagnant industrial sector in recent years, but what is clear is that it has not yet brought anything that was not already there before it arrived. I am going to explain to you point by point, why Apple Music is no better than the competition.

What Apple Music is not

Apple Music promised to be the platform platform during its launch, but we are still awaiting what Apple Music offers us, undoubtedly a ship that has been launched to the high seas without finishing. None of its functions turned out to be so bad, its interface is by no means the friendliest and its music is simply the same as that of the competition. That is why I can affirm what Apple Music is not, it is certainly not a revolutionary music streaming platform. If a case, one day it could be, but now it is not, and these are my reasons.

Free is king

Free service in exchange for publicity ?, Apple says: «No thanks«. Of course, in a world where the most demanded applications are "freemium", where piracy is the order of the day and where Spotify has 45 million users of its free plan. I think it is not that difficult to understand, people are reluctant to enter their credit card in depending on which places, and then there are those who settle for mediocrity or simply who do not mind advertising, it is the price to pay for listen to music for free and they have decided not to pay money.

Apple has not been able to take advantage of the pull, in fact, it offers you a totally free three-month trial, but the first thing it does is request your credit card information. Raise your hand first, who in three months will remember to cancel your subscription so as not to see how 9,99 euros disappear from your account. The free is the boss, paying for an application or a service has long since ceased to be a mark of quality, companies have found much more potential in the world of advertising, or simply in the fact of selling your personal information, call it what you want.

A good sign of this is that Spotify currently has more than fifteen million Premium users, of which of course, all of them will have previously benefited from the free system and after the month or three months of trial that Spotify grants (remember that Spotify offers 3 months of Premium for € 0,99), therefore, it is quite evident that has managed to convince them.

Multi platform? Another day if anything

spotify-vs-apple-music

Yes, we promise an application for Windows 10 and for Android, but don't worry, there's no rush. It seems like Tim Cook forgot to note that more than 80% of devices smart devices found on the market are installed as an operating system Android, and that means many millions of users. That little disregard for the android platform can cost Apple dearly. Although it is true that the integration with Windows is total due to the iTunes issue, it must be borne in mind that the iTunes suite for Windows is not exactly the one that most respects the stability and performance of a PC, and in this Spotify also is light years away, offering a dedicated platform, simple, easy to use and easily recognizable in all systems.

Musixmatch, because there are those who love to sing

It may seem like a small detail, but one that is quite considerable for many. Apple Music does not include any kind of system for detecting or offering song lyrics. Spotify, on the other hand, has long been bringing full integration with the Musixmatch platform, the world's largest and most accurate song lyrics database, adapted in the purest karaoke style, which has undoubtedly enlivened more than one party. Once again, Spotify wins.

What does Apple Music offer me?

We might think that Apple Music also offers something above the competition, for example the quality of the music. Certainly not, offers almost totally identical quality to Rdio and Spotify, not to mention that platforms like TIDAL leave it totally on the floor. What would it have cost them to enable a high-fidelity audio system, even if it were only via WiFi or for Macs? It seems that they ignored the sound foodies. A bit disconcerting move when you consider that Apple owns one of the headphone company that generates the most revenue in the world, and it is none other than Monster Beats.

Then, Will you offer me sweeping prices?. Nor has Apple simply slightly made up prices offered by the competition, keeping exactly the same price as for example Spotify for the individual subscription, having to take advantage of the "family" of up to 6 devices to really pay off with respect to the competition. As for the three months of free trials that have generated so much controversy and applause, we must remember that for many months (almost a year) that Spotify has been offering a three-month subscription of Spotify Premium at the price of € 0,99, without a doubt I don't think the difference of one euro motivates a user to select one or the other system.

Lists lack life and meaning

apple music

It is true that Apple Music is quite right with musical tastes if we compare it with Spotify for example, but it is no less true than the lists that Apple boasts so much that they are composed and elaborated by Apple personnel they are quite poor, sometimes you find lists composed of less than fifteen songs, which force you to be continuously interacting with Apple Music so as not to be left listening to the pleasant silence by surprise.

On the other hand, it does not have any type of system of the most listened to hits in Apple Music, however it shows us a list of the most listened to songs, but they forgot to include the play button to be able to play them often. Needless to say, they don't include any kind of music list by country, which forces you to practically swallow all the commercial music from the United States, there has been and will be. Of course, this movement will penalize them a lot in countries with certain musical cultures, for example the Netherlands where electronic music is our father in the charts, ignoring Spain, where you can hear Kiko Rivera (Paquirrín) among the top 10 of songs.

Connect, yes, but with whom?

It was presented as an incredible platform that artists would use almost like Twitter, where they would interact with their loyal followers every day, even showing videos and songs exclusively. But the truth is that no, that section has less movement than a plaster cat. The few who have deigned to write something smell like Apple money miles away. In fact, recently Jimmy Iovine has already come to the fore to tell us that he expects a lot from this function, however it is quite evident that there is no artist enthusiastic about this possibility.

Conclusions

Apple Music is here to stay, of course, but it would be blind to say that it has revolutionized the market in any respect. At the user interface level it does not offer a notable advantage, in fact it has received more criticism than praise. At the level of quality and prices, it has not been a real change either, they have simply dedicated themselves to making up the prices offered by the competition to give a feeling of savings that is practically not real.

As with WhatsApp and its hundreds of annual "killers", it is difficult to nobody get to take down Spotify. It is clear that Spotify has a place not only on devices, but also in the hearts of many people, it was the first, and also for free. And most importantly, people often find a greater affinity in dedicated companies, focused on a single service, and not related to multinationals.

At least for now, Apple Music is becoming one of those applications that Apple embeds in its devices and for which we have our ideal substitute. These have been my reasons why I think Apple Music is no better than the competition. These lines are the result of a subjective opinion, not necessarily shared by the rest of the people, but that I have tried to offer with the maximum possible rigor. The intention of this article and the reply that my colleague Juan Colilla will offer is none other than to motivate you to offer your different points of view on the subject, so, take advantage of the comments section to indicate whether or not you agree, and the why, your opinion also counts.

As much as I want to, I can't find anything attractive about Apple Music. I received it with great enthusiasm. I even canceled my premium Spotify account, but I activated it again because the truth is that I stay with Spotify for my whole life. Be careful, I'm not saying that Apple Music is bad, perhaps for many it is novel and practical, but not for me.

I used it for a while, I saw some very strange menus, I didn't find the music I wanted and I continued with spotify. I will not use it again.

Finally a post with a face and eyes on the truth of Apple Music. I agree with many of the comments on the post. Like many apps in the appstore: «Test and delete». I continue with Spotify and things have to vary a lot for it to change.
    Greetings.

I agree on everything! Horrible interface and the assembly of the playlists is a headache. I stay with Spotify my whole life, a feeling!

The only reason I have not canceled my Apple music subscription yet is that the 3 free months have not yet expired. From my Ipad and Iphone I already deactivated it a while ago because they never synchronized the songs…. I had a lot of playlists with music from the computer and he would only pass me the songs he found in the stream, leaving half of my songs "gray".

From the PC I have not deactivated apple music yet but it will not pass beyond 3 months. Let's see if those 11 million subscribers that Apple boasts so much are going to stay with them when they see a 10 Euro discount on their credit card, and they remember that 3 months ago they subscribed to a service that they could never use and what Fools who went by accepting a free trial but charging your card.

Apple from bad to worse ...

I understand your annoyance with Music but in my personal case it seems to me the best alternative since in Colombia the family plan is 7.99 USD about 21.000 COP for 6 people that is 3.500 COP per month each while Spotify charges us 1.000 for the first 3 months and from then on 11.500 COP, as you can see in my personal case it is more favorable Music, in other aspects I share some opinions, and as we say here «between tastes there are no dislikes»

I only read ignorant messages, even part of the post. You do not have to be a fan, you have to be objective, and the first thing is that not everyone knows that apple music exists, there are even people that I have seen who do not even have Siri activated (although they do not use it), because they do not even know that it exists. apple music or spotify is not for everyone. I do not use spotify because I am not interested, I have all the music on my pc, and I do not listen to the lists that Apple music gives me because I create my own lists, that is, I take advantage of what it offers to download free music until the subscription lasts , something that there are people who do not know that you can do that.

Apple had all the weapons in its power to build the best streaming music application but it came to nothing: interface is not pretty and chaotic in all aspects, you cannot access a top 50 of the most listened to songs in X country, the Price could have been cheaper and there is no joke in the entire iTunes catalog of more than 40 million songs.

I read a lot of bad milk in the text and it honestly sounds more like a Spotify fanboy than someone who even tried to give another steeaming service a chance.

I will likewise say what I think but with more objectivity, I believe that the Spotify service is very good, the problem for me when I tried to use it was the sound quality.

For a long time I only listen to my music in the m4a extension or in other words, music downloaded from iTunes and the quality for me from iTunes is much higher than any mp3 in addition to being distributed in 5 channels and not in 2 as mp3s do. , which makes it a joy to listen to my music on my sound system. Even in headphones the sound fidelity is far superior to any mp3.

That said, when listening to Spotify, even in its extreme quality, it left me with a terrible taste in my mouth, it sounds tremendously bad.

When I listen to Apple Music the first thing I notice was that the quality of the music you download is identical to what you download from iTunes so I strongly differ with your comment that the quality is poor. Absolutely. It is very good so so that was simply the reason that made me choose to subscribe without thinking twice.

For me, the menu is not complicated at all, it makes me very curious that people say it, but thinking about it now, they are so used to Apple making everything so simple that at the first complication the cry goes to heaven.

In Mexico, the service says that it will cost $ 100 pesos, which in exchange is a fraction of what is charged in the USA ($ 9.99) so without any doubt I will be with Apple Music for a long time.

    1.    Daniel said

I think you are not well informed of the prices.

From then on, only $ 99.00 / month. With Spotify Premium, play any song, anywhere, instantly.

      1.    Paul Huerta said

It's what I said, $ 100 pesos a month. $ 10 dollars in the USA if the change were real I would be paying $ 163 pesos per month approximately.

I agree with almost all the comments, (love being a fanboy) music, has a horrible interface, with very few songs per list and with a thousand conflicts of synchronization, duplication, etc; but also each song takes centuries to start and something that for me is very important, IT DOES NOT HAVE CROSSFADE IN ITS SONGS (as if our iTunes library does); that is, the songs are NOT "merged or mixed", and finally the quality of Spotify is superior. All this is horror coming from , it can happen to anyone, but not to a company that always offered "value" to its products and to which I have been very loyal for more than ten years.  the aim is beginning to sharpen, because you have been in decline for four years; How much we miss you Steve !!!

Regrettable article and with inaccurate or directly false information, when it says that Apple is the owner of Monster Beats? , Monster is one company and Beats is another…, Apple only owns Beats, that previously there was an alliance between Beats and Monster is something else…. On the other hand, there has been the MusixMatch application for IOS for years, which integrates perfectly with Apple Music, that the quality of the music is the same as that of Spotify? They should dig a little deeper and go into detail: Apple Music streams at a 256Kbps bit rate in the Advances Audio Coding (ACC) format, while Spotify uses the Ogg Vorbis format at 320Kbps.

The folks at The Verge have done a little study / test among the members of the Vox Media team. For this they have used Sony's MDR-7506 headphones and an iPhone 6 Plus. Each individual listened to three songs, of a different musical type, in each of the services randomly and of course "blindly." Before listening to the music they had to think about three options to rate the quality: noticeably better, noticeably worse, or if they all sounded the same.

The results are very curious. Spotify during the test, in general, is the worst option behind Apple Music and Tidal, according to the responses of the participants. In 29% of the tests, none could highlight any noticeable difference. Tidal, which offers the best quality, was repeatedly rated as the worst among the three services.

Does Apple Music offer nothing new compared to Spotify? I think so:

    - With a single personal account you can listen to your music on all devices that have the same iCloud account. In Spotify none of that, just one device. If you listen on the iPhone and someone opens Spotify on your Mac, Bye Bye.

    - For € 14 you have 6 accounts. At last my wife's music is on her own and not mixed with mine. At last my father has a streaming music service since for the little that he used Spotify it was not worth paying him. When my son wants to have his account in a couple of years, he will already have it and I will not pay another euro.

    - Integration with the system. As it is a native application, it enjoys full integration with the system. That is due to the own restrictions that Apple imposes on third-party applications, true, but it is still an advantage of Apple Music over the competition.

Only these three things already justify (at least for me) that I leave Spotify. If we add to this that the catalog is, at least, the same as Spotify (I would say even somewhat superior), the end result is that Apple Music is, for me, superior to Spotify.

It is true that the application for iOS 9 needs to improve, in fact it is improving. In iOS 9 the Music app has already fixed some of the problems it had, like those endless menus, but it still needs to improve. Let's not forget that, even if it is Apple, it is a service with just two months of life and at once more than 10 million users.
