Announced at CES 2019 earlier this year, the new Yi Home 3 security camera is now available with a new artificial intelligence system that promises to notify you only when it should, thanks to its recognition of people and avoiding the typical false positives of this type of camera.
With 1080p recording, H264 compression system, night vision, baby cry detection and a long etcetera, this new Home model arrives to further expand the brand's security camera catalog, and it also does it with a very competitive price. We have tested it and we will tell you about it below.
Artificial intelligence to power
Home security cameras have gone from being an accessory that you only found in the homes of the most “geeks” to being something very common in any home. More and more people are choosing to rely on their own video surveillance system without having to resort to the high monthly fees offered by other security companies. Security cameras have also advanced and today any model worth its salt has night vision and FullHD (1080p) quality. Nevertheless There are some differential factors that must be taken into account when we talk about home security cameras: fees for the service, the possibility of local and / or cloud storage, and advanced functions such as artificial intelligence.
The Yi brand has made the right decision to allow the user to decide if they want a cloud service and pay for it (the prices are quite interesting), or if you prefer to use a local storage system using microSD cards and not pay any type of monthly fee. You will be able to access your videos remotely as long as you have internet regardless of the option chosen, and there are very few differences in the benefits you receive for the free or paid service (more information at this link).
And of course, nothing is more important than an alarm system that alerts you when it is really necessary. The false positives, so frequent in conventional cameras, end up causing you to ignore any warning you receive, losing all the sense of setting up a video surveillance system. It is important that it does not warn you because a light has come on, because a car has passed with the lights on or because a fly has landed on the target. The artificial intelligence system of the new Yi Home camera makes the warnings real, only when it detects people.
In addition, it also warns you when it detects a noise such as a baby crying, so that you can even use it as a surveillance camera in the bedroom of the little ones in the house. Notifications give you direct access to those alerts and to small, short videos but they show you what happens at the exact moment it happened.
A good app, and a good image
Once you install the cameras, what you are going to handle on a daily basis is going to be the application, an element that on many occasions is not given the importance it deserves, and that can turn an excellent product into something practically useless. Luckily in this case we have the Yi Home application (link), very easy to use, translated into Spanish and that allows you to gather all the cameras of the brand you have in a single app. With the app you can see live, you can talk with those on the other side or see the alerts that have occurred in chronological order. You can even set automatic on and off times. After more than a year using these cameras and application I only miss one thing: smart alerts by location that avoid notifications when I am at home.
Regarding image quality, we find a camera that allows record in 1080p 20fps and reproduce in the same quality or lower if you are using mobile data. Of course it allows recording by night vision, and all this with a viewing angle of 107 degrees. The camera is designed to be placed on any shelf thanks to its base, which is also magnetic, so if you want you can place it on any metal surface without having to use adhesives or screws. It works using a microUSB cable and a charger included in the box, and it connects to your WiFi network (2,4GHz) to have permanent access to the internet.
