A few weeks ago YouTube announced a change in the API that would affect several devices among which we find those based on versions of iOS 6 and earlier and also second generation Apple TV devices, but not only the devices manufactured by the guys from Cupertino have been affected by this change, which from now on will be forced to visit the web directly since the dedicated application will stop working on those devices.
The app has disappeared from Apple TV devices second generation and the owners have not been able to find it again or by accessing the configuration menus where we can hide or show channels at will or according to our needs and as a sign of the disappearance of the YouTube application, we have the image that heads Article.
YouTube warned developers that it would start doing so-called dark tests for API v2 during the month of May so that devices that do not support the changes made will no longer be able to access the service. These changes are motivated to be able to add more functionalities to the application although, as always happens, older devices will not be able to use it. They will be able to continue accessing the service through the website to view and search for videos.
The devices that are affected by the API update are: manufactured to 2012 and earlier of the following devices and brands:
- Sony TVs and Blu-ray Players
- Panasonic TVs and Blu-ray players.
- sony playstation vita
- Devices that have iOS 6 or earlier versions installed.
- First and second generation Apple TV.
In these cases the term planned obsolescence is ideal to define the changes that, motivated by the new functions of the applications, cause devices with a certain time to be out of the market, forcing users to change their devices if they want to continue enjoying the latest.
I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.1.6 and the truth is that the YouTube application continues to work perfectly. So this affects devices with iOS 6.0 down (?)
The only thing that happens is that from now on, the YouTube application will no longer receive updates, because they are not compatible with versions prior to iOS 7.
Well, no, I misformatted my iPhone 4 and because I didn't have iOS 8 I can't install YouTube again, I'll never buy an iPhone again. I'm really upset.
