Upcoming iPhones may already use the "Always on" display like the Apple Watch Series 5

LTPO display

The most significant novelty that the new Apple Watch series 5 has brought us is its new screen. It uses a new technology called LTPO, which manages to go down from 60 frames per second of refreshment to only 1, also lowering the intensity and brightness of the colors.

Thanks to this, it has the new "always on" function so that the screen is always visible, without affecting the daily autonomy of the device (in theory). It seems that this new OLED screen may be present in the next iPhone of 2020.

According to the Korean website The elect, Apple plans to use LTPO low-power backplane technology in its upcoming iPhone models. This backplane is responsible for turning the screen pixels on and off individually. The article explains that this OLED screen will be mounted on the new Samsung smartwatch, but the comment it makes about Apple has not gone unnoticed:

“Meanwhile, Apple is moving to use LTPO panels more widely in its future iPhones. This means that it needs to find ways to work together with Samsung Display, a leader in technology and productivity in the small and medium OLED sector.

LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) has a TFT structure that uses up to 15 percent less energy than LTPS (Low Temperature Polysilicon), the technology currently used in Apple mobile screens. This would help lower the battery consumption of future iPhones.

The Apple Watch Series 5 already mounts this LTPO screen. Those from Cupertino ensure that thanks to the combination of this new screen, a new low-power controller, and a new ambient light sensor, the screen can always be on, maintaining the 18-hour battery life as the previous model.

The first OLED display that Apple built was on the original Apple Watch in 2015. Two years later, iPhone X was the first phone to go from LCD to OLED. It would not be surprising, then, that the LTPO already jumps to the next iPhone next year.

If this rumor goes well under way, together with the compatibility of the 5G network, they will be two very important features for the next iPhone. And that only a month ago that the new iPhone 11 was launched.
