Review of Amplifi Teleport, your VPN anywhere

VPNs are increasingly known for the advantages they offer us. Greater privacy when browsing, the ability to "trick" browsers and services by setting custom locations, or the ability to bypass restrictions and proxies because the browsing data is encrypted are just some of these advantages.

The disadvantages include the slowness of free VPNs, and that if we want higher speed we will have to pay monthly fees while using the service. With the Amplifi Teleport we will take advantage of all the advantages of a VPN without these disadvantages, since we will only have to acquire this small device and start using it wherever we are. We have tried it and we will tell you everything below.

Amplifi Teleport, plug and play

This small Amplifi Teleport has the size of an external battery for our iPhone, approximately. We can buy it individually, but since it only works with the Ubiquiti Amplifi HD router, they also offer us a pack which includes the Teleport and the router so that we can save a few euros if we still don't have anything from the brand. If you want you can see the analysis we did of the Amplifi HD router in this link, one of the best options we have right now on the market if we want to use a network MESH for our house.

Be that as it may, the fact that it is specifically designed to work with this router model is that they are devices that are perfectly understood right out of the box. In the purest Apple style, starting to use the Teleport once we have configured the Amplifi HD router is as simple as plugging in and little else. No advanced knowledge or things like that, setting up your VPN network is available to anyone. You will only need an adapter for the plug in question, since the one that comes with this Teleport is the American plug.

Connected to your home network from anywhere

What does this Amplifi Teleport do? It can be summarized in that you will be connected to your home network wherever you are. You will be able to enjoy all your services and all the functions that you use at home: shared hard drives, computers on your network, smart devices… Do you want to access your Netflix catalog from a country where it is not available? No problems, since everything will indicate that you are connected to your home, even if you are thousands of kilometers away.

Generally, when you think of a VPN, what you want is to do the opposite., simulate connections in other countries to be able to access services that you do not have in your place of residence. Amplifi Teleport is just the opposite, but it makes a ton of sense. Access your shared network hard drives from anywhere? Or to a specific folder on your classroom computer? Control a device that doesn't have remote access from outside your network? All this and much more is what you can do with this little device.

How It Works

This Amplifi Teleport works by connecting to the network in question, create your own WiFi network and connect your devices to the Teleport network. This way you will not have to memorize the password on all the devices you take on a trip, because the Teleport network is always the same. A very simple interface will allow you to connect to any available network, 2,4 and 5GHz, or directly via Ethernet thanks to the connection that the Teleport includes. Once you give it access to the network you have selected, your devices will automatically have access to the internet connected to the Teleport network. Nothing better than watching the header video to check the operation live both from your mobile device and from a computer.

The Amplifi Teleport will establish a direct connection to your home router, to which you have previously linked it, and through a completely encrypted connection that guarantees maximum security, for practical purposes we can say that it will be as if you were connected to the home router. No geolocation restrictions, no proxies, no nothing at all. And you can connect several devices at the same time, something very interesting because in some networks they charge per connected device.

As you can see, it is an ideal device to connect to public networks or when you are on vacation away from home. And do not worry about accessing your bank account connected to the hotel network, since as we have pointed out before, data encryption makes your browsing as secure as if you were accessing from home.

Limitations

I have only encountered two problems in all this time that I have tested this Teleport, and it is that you cannot manually indicate the name of the network to which you want it to connect, so you cannot connect to networks that have their SSID hidden. You also can't manually configure IP or DNS, a problem if the network in question does not have DHCP enabled. These are two very specific limitations that will only be inconvenient in very specific cases, but which I have made known to the manufacturer, who has told me that they will transmit it to their engineers in case there is a way to solve it.

We also have another limitation that will come from your home internet connection. Your browsing speed will be determined by the download speed of the network you are connected to and the upload speed of your home network. The one with the lowest value will be the one that marks your browsing speed. With the increasingly widespread fiber optics and upload speeds that in many cases are already 100 or 300MB, only the connection speed of the network to which you have connected could be a problem.

Editor's opinion

The Amplifi Teleport is a very practical, affordable and easy-to-use solution for those looking for the advantages of being able to connect to the home network from anywhere. Very light and with a very small size, you can connect to any public or private network with the guarantee that your privacy is as assured as if you were browsing from the home network. Skipping geolocation restrictions or being able to access devices connected to your home network is within everyone's reach as long as there is a plug. This Amplifi Teleport was launched as a successful Kinckstarter campaign and is now available for sale in the United States. The manufacturer has confirmed to us that in a couple of months it will be available for sale in Europe both in physical stores and online, and we will inform you promptly. What we do not know is its final price in Spain, but in the United States it has a price of $ 96,49 and $ 208 if we want the complete kit with the router.
