The big failure of the iPhone 5: its camera

The iPhone 5, itself, is a great phone. Apple has surprised us with a thin and, above all, lightweight device that works better and surfs the internet at high speed (well, at least in countries where LTE connectivity is available). However, the phone has a big annoying glitch: the camera And its bloody purple reflection

The first users to test the iPhone 5 were those who raised the alarm on the company's official forums. Indeed, after carrying out some simple tests anywhere, we verified that when point to a spotlight, a purple glow appeared on the phone screen and in our photos. Readers of Actualidad iPhone They also acknowledged suffering from this problem.

It was difficult for Apple, once again, to pronounce on the subject, but finally he mentioned it on his website. We remember his words:

Symptoms:

A purple or other colored glow, beam or stain from an external focus to the image appears when taking photos or recording video.

Solution:

Most cameras, including those that iPhones of different generations have, could show a reflection in the corner of the photo when taking an image with external light sources. This occurs when the light bulb is positioned at an angle (usually outside the field of view) that causes a reflection from surfaces within the camera module and on its sensor. To eliminate or reduce the effect, move the camera slightly to prevent this glare from entering the lenses or shield the lenses with your hand.

In short, Apple told us: «point the camera away«.

Months later, this purple glow is still a big annoyance when taking photos indoors and outdoors. What happens if what I am going to portray I want to do from an angle in which there is a light source? The only solution we have left is either move the camera a little or then crop the photo.

For example, in this panoramic photo, already cropped in the upper right corner, if we hurry a little more we will run out of mountains:

Yes, the conditions when taking dark photos have improved, but on the contrary we find this annoying problem that, of course, will be solved in the next iPhone that Apple launches on the market this year.

Meanwhile, those of us who have this problem with the iPhone 5 will have to learn to live with the purple stain that appears in our photographs. Some may even get lucky and get their terminal replaced at an Apple store.

Hello, I have a question, but it is with the new iPod Touch. When taking certain shots there are "green dots", is this normal or will the camera be damaged? It would be a great help if someone informs me. Thanks.

For a lifetime it has been known that photos are not taken directly towards the sun, I do not know why we put our hands on our heads now.

It seems to me that you have not found out very well what the subject is about. I encourage you to re-read the article and when you understand it, put a comment with a little more meaning, because at no time does it say anything about taking "photos directly towards the sun…."

      1.    Alex said

That is what I say. I don't know who takes pictures against the sun ... they've always been fatal taken with any camera.

        1.    Javier Fuentes said

What a brutal lie, I am an amateur photographer, and I have taken countless photos directly in the sun, some, with cameras shared as with professionals. It is a matter of knowing how to handle the camera and get the hang of taking the photo you want, I never had a purple beam in my photos.

Who said that photos are not taken in the sun? I have done many, and without producing a similar effect, the problem is unique to the iPhone 5

      1.    iPhone 5 said

You got it? I have it and that is not true, I have focused the camera and it does not make the purple effect

Well, my iPhone 5 does not come out pink !!!! The flash is white !!

Well, I have photos pointing to the sun made with my iPhone 4 and that flash comes out the same ...

  7.   mastontoynonaces said

What is a great failure is that you know how to write male ... That is not a failure is something that ALL GOOD CAMERAS IN THE WORLD HAVE WHEN POINTING TO A POWERFUL LIGHT, I have professional canon and nikon models (for my work) and what happens same. Just because people don't have a clue about using a camera doesn't mean the camera is bad. Surely you are the typical one frustrated by not taking good photos, who thinks that the iPhone being Apple will take them perfect for you.

    1.    Manuel said

Are you sure you use professional cameras? As far as I know, when taking photos against the light, the subject comes out with a strong shadow to be able to adapt the exposure to the background, I have never had one with a purple flash.

In fact, I would dare to say that I have dozens of photos taken under those conditions with a canon 5d MII and I have never seen that, and with my iPhone 4s I easily pass 100 photos with luminous objects in the corners and in the background without that effect.

    2.    Pablo_Ortega said

I have a professional camera and I can assure you that this does not happen.

      1.    Luis Nadal said

what you say is impossible since the exposure of the light will always hinder the taking of the photo, unless you know how to handle the camera very well as a professional usually does, I have a nikon 3100 and it is for beginners and I will tell you what photos they tend to go wrong in the sun.

    3.    As a professional you have nothing said

Don't be a liar, I'm tired of taking photos direct to the sun and light sources with my iphone 3gs and it does NOT have that problem, in fact normal, professional and mobile cameras are designed to work under those conditions and the photos turn out well, no perfect, just fine. And the liar thing for saying that all cameras have the same problem and for saying that you are a professional photographer when it is seen from leagues that you are not.
The problem is with the iphone and point fanboy, whether you like it or not. And only the iPhone 5 has that problem, it is the only device for a material of I do not remember what story the lens has and said by Tim Cook himself.

They do that up to the SLR of 1500 euros of body, brave ignorance by God …….

    I don't have that problem

Gentlemen, I believe that iphone5 has more serious faults than a simple purple reflection on your camera. Reflection that by the way also presents other models and yet it is not given greater importance. We should focus on improving IOS and polishing the bugs that are really touching our morale a bit like WIFI connectivity. I am very happy with iphone5 and it takes wonderful photos, what's more, I have taken numerous photos during the day and that reflection has not come out, therefore, I have spent a bit of that topic. What if we want, and I reiterate, is an IOS FACE WASH please. already good since 2007.

    How old are you, Ortega?

  12.   albert said

Well it is not such an annoying failure, I have an iPhone 5 and took more than 300 photos and I still have not encountered this problem, and the day that passes me I do not think it will give the slightest importance.

  13.   Stefano said

Boys, the only thing I have to say to the camera is thank you, in the 4s when I took photos in the dark, the entire photo was painted white and it was the truth, that a useless photo. In number 5 that is absolutely solved and he takes the best photos that a cell phone can take. This purple glow does not seem so serious to me, if you are taking a photo against the sun it is obvious that something is going to go wrong, because the brightness is going to be, be it white, purple or multicolored, you have half of the photo ruined by a shine . And taking into account the incredible camera it has, it seems totally exaggerated and even out of place to say that the camera is the great failure of the cell phone

As soon as I turned on my iPhone 5 2 weeks ago, the first thing I looked at was that, and it's been 2 weeks in which I've taken all kinds of photos AND I DON'T HAVE THE PURPLE HALO, and don't tell me to do them noseomo, I've done more than 100 photos in all possible lights and situations and approaches and I don't have that problem or any other with the camera, it's a marvel!

The iPhone 5 fails iOS6, for whatever nonsense the battery melts, it takes me more battery to have the iPhone connected to Wifi than to have it connected to a 3G network. Another thing that I have noticed is that when it is not covered, being blocked, the battery eats it up. It lasts longer than my old 3GS, but it does not seem fair that due to software problems we cannot enjoy the hardware!

    1.    Stefano said

It's weird that your battery doesn't last long, because it lasts a long time for me. Make sure you calibrate it, because it shouldn't happen.

  15.   AngelM said

I have not had that problem so far!

  16.   albertoglezc said

Go ahead that, although I like photography, I'm just a fan of it. I am not professional.

Nobody has considered that the problem is quite possibly the optics as such of the iphone?

There is a concept called chromatic aberration that is the cause of purple halos or similar in contrast of highlights and usually in the contours, although it can happen in other conditions. In the case of optics with lens groups this is more likely to happen (if I'm not wrong).

    1.    albertoglezc said

Some talk about professional SLR cameras that does not happen, that if it happens ...

It doesn't matter which camera has one, it costs € 600 or it costs € 30.000. Without good optics you can make a professional camera shoot with the same quality as a € 80 camera. The quality of the optics makes a lot of difference and taking into account that it is a mobile lens it will never reach the quality of a SLR ...

The same thing happens to me ... I have that camera problem ... I don't know if it goes through warranty, but tomorrow I'll go ask, so I hope they change my cell phone, but then I'll keep it, just think twice to buy a new iPhone, Apple is falling, and at great speed…: $

Someone can tell me why when I take a panoramic photo it comes out as bent, that is, for example, you take a photo of the bar of a bar and in the photo the bar appears as if it were making a curve, the bar being straight of course. wrong photo? or is it some kind of defect?

  20.   Nuria said

Well, what worries me is not that. And I would like to know if it happens to more people. It is that it deforms objects to me. Come on, it is slightly and in landscapes I do not care because it is hardly appreciated but in objects and people it is noticeable, my phone is only two weeks old. Does it happen to someone? What I do ??

Well, gentlemen, I have a great doubt and it is a very annoying problem when I take photos with the front camera, they turn on their own, for example I have an object on the right, I take a picture with the front camera and it comes out to the left I wanted to know if it is something normal or You can change something please, it is something very annoying since I cannot take photos with the front camera

Hello, I do not know if someone still answers this post, but I have the same problem with Yosef, with the front camera of my IPhone 4 and the back camera is calibrated so dark that nothing can be seen, everything started to happen after updating to the latest IOS7
    Can somebody help me?
