In short, it is an important purchase that was settled a few days ago with Apple's spending of 332 million euros, but surely they are the most well invested in recent months for them, since it allows them to move away from the competition of this manufacturer.
In this case it is investment for R&D
The purchase of companies that produce components for Apple devices directly translate into investments in R&D (Research and Development). In this case, they will be able to focus on the production of vertical cavity and surface emission laser devices (VCSEL), which, explained in a simpler way, is a technology that is included from the iPhone X, iPhone XS, XR and now also iPad Pro for the operation of Face ID, Animoji or portrait mode, in addition to being also used for the proximity sensor of the AirPods headphones.
Apple explains that this technology it is much better than what a traditional LED offers and in this way the readings are more stable and offer better performance. Apple's purchase increase on these VCSEL sheets will be ten times more during the next four quarters of the year. This purchase increases the investment in Finisar and the company itself explains that some 500 new jobs will be created among qualified engineers and technicians.
In this way, Apple adds this company that has two factories in Texas, in Sherman and in Allen, to its list of companies based in the United States, on which will offer a portion of its $ 1.000 billion fund that he promised to invest the government in companies in the country.
Finisar is also a manufacturer of Fiber Optic Gbics, the transceivers (or gadgets) that convert data into pulses of laser light and vice versa.
