Belkin's WeMo Brings the Internet of Things to LED Bulbs

Of Mo

The more and more famous IoT (Internet of Things) or Internet of Things is hitting hard in the second half of 2015, but it will be from next year until the end of the decade when its explosion is final. At the end of the day, we are now experiencing the birth of the first generations of these products and those of us who bet on them are still known as early adopters.

A good start

In the case at hand, we have used the basic kit of two bulbs with their corresponding communicator, which is placed at a slightly lower price than the Philips Hue Lux, its clearer rival. The quality in the construction of the bulbs and the communicator is literally impeccable, and in all the brightness tests the result is slightly higher than that of standard LED bulbs and also that of Philips Hue Lux, maintaining a similar energy consumption and certified as A +. Remember that they are warm white bulbs, with no possibility of color.

The installation is really simple, and the app Belkin WeMo It will guide us through the whole process, which if we exclude firmware updates shouldn't take more than a minute or two. It is a pity that the updates are not as fast as we would like, and sometimes they make the app confused and we have to restart it in order to start working correctly.

Improvable app

If you expected an app to measure up to the product, it is not. The application It is good and it fulfills most of the tasks, but fails in aspects such as design or speed of execution, two very important things when in iOS we are used to a design and performance that is usually above average.

I really liked the possibility of independent programming or group of lights depending on the time, being able to configure the dusk and dawn automatically based on our location. A very clear plus point that is overshadowed when Belkin decides not to use that same geolocation function to allow us to perform actions when leaving or arriving at our home. In addition, as a good IoT product, it has IFTTT integration, although at the moment I have found it a bit limited and for example it does not allow to activate or deactivate rules depending on the event, a real shame, but nothing that is not solvable.

The cost of starter kit It is around 75-85 euros depending on the place where we buy it, since it is sold in multiple physical and online stores such as Amazon, while the additional bulbs They are around 30 euros. In the end, it is between 5 and 10 times more than a standard LED bulb, but if you like home automation, the IoT and managing everything you can in your home from your iPhone (and from anywhere) is the price to pay.
