Withings and its smart scale, a safe bet

Weighing machine

Continuing with the analysis of the past weeks about products related to the Internet of Things (IoT - Internet of Things) as some smart bulbs or thermostatThis week we're taking a look at Withings' high-end smart scale, a product I've been using more than a year and a half so we can give a good account of its positive and negative points without the conditions of having used it for a short period of time.

The weight and much more

While Withings offers a basic scale that only allows us to monitor the weight, in this article we will focus on the Smart Body Analyzer (WS-50) scale, which tells us the weight but it also incorporates other interesting functions such as heart rate meter, body fat analysis, body mass index, air quality meter (CO2) and even a weather forecast for the day you enter our town.

The scale is excellently constructed, with a finish that otherwise does justice to the high price what's wrong with it. We are facing a premium product and the least we can do is notice it every time we see and touch it, even with our feet. The screen also fully complies, since low consumption has been sought by sacrificing resolution, but it has a backlight to use it in low light conditions.

Synchronized

Like any product based on the IoT, the key is the interconnection with various platforms. In the case of Withings we have an excellent web interface, but we are interested in the iPhon appe, which has been improving - at least in the two years that I have been using it - in a remarkable way until today it reaches a really high level of design and reliability.

The scale synchronizes our weighing with a WiFi network, or if we do not have it available, via Bluetooth through the iPhone, this option being much less comfortable. A posteriori we can access all the data from our iPhone, being able to reconfigure the scale or add new users.

Regarding this last question, it should be noted that it is implemented in a really elegant. If, for example, we are two users of the scale at home, both can be configured in the same Withings account or in different accounts, and if the weight of the two people is similar, we will be asked to lean left or right to say who owns the weigh-in. A smart, simple and well thought out solution.

The scale, as we have discussed before, is not cheap. The price is around 145 euros normally, but as we have commented in the previous analyzes, it is the cost of going to the last and being on the Internet of Things. It is worth every euro it costs, another thing is that you think it convenient or not to spend 150 euros on a scale, but that is another matter for you to determine.
